Review: Canon EOS 800D specs

Published 17 March 2025 by MPB

Launched in 2017, the Canon EOS 800D features a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor designed to deliver amazing detail in still images. The 800D has an autofocus system with 45 cross-type autofocus points and a continuous shooting speed of up to six frames per second—all in a body that weighs just 532g [18.77oz] including battery and memory card.

The APS-C format sensor in the 800D incorporates 24.2 effective megapixels. The camera’s 45 autofocus points are all cross-type, which means they analyse both horizontal and vertical lines to help to deliver accurate, central focusing. All of the autofocus points are linked to the camera’s 63-zone, RGB+IR metering sensor for evaluative, and accurate metering of all scenes. As the ‘RGB’ suggests, the metering system also evaluates colour for accurate rendition in differing lighting conditions, including infrared.

On the rear of the 800D is a Vari-angle 3-inch (7.7cm) Clear View II TFT LCD screen, which has 1,040K sRGB dots, is in a 3:2 format, offers approximately 100% coverage and can have its brightness adjusted to one of seven levels. All of this helps for the easy review of your still images. The LCD displays the camera settings and a Quick Control Screen for rapid access to information about what settings and controls are in use. It also has an Electronic level to help you to shoot straight horizons in landscape pictures.

The Vari-angle LCD screen is adjustable for shooting stills and movies in fresh and exciting angles. Plus, when you’re composing images in Live View—when the screen is showing exactly what the sensor is seeing—it has a super-fast autofocus system that can focus in as little as 0.03sec. That speed is augmented by a six-frames-per-second continuous shooting speed that can capture up to 27 RAW images with a UHS-I card.

The EOS 800D features a built-in WiFi and Bluetooth system to instantly share or store the images you’ve just shot. Simply install the Canon Camera Connect app on your compatible devices. The 800D also includes Near Field Communication (NFC) to connect to compatible smartphones. The APS-C format CMOS sensor effectively adds a further 1.6x focal length power to your pictures. For example, a 100mm lens on the 800D will give you an effective focal length of 160mm in comparison to the same 100mm lens on a full-frame camera. Thus you're effectively getting 'closer' to subjects, ideal for genres like wildlife or sports.

The standard ISO range of the 800D is 100-25,600, but an additional ’H’ expandable setting means you can shoot at up to ISO 51,200. This is a great setting that’s more than capable of handling almost any lighting situation while maintaining sharpness and crisp focusing in your images with little to no noise.

Overall, the 800D has an impressive all-around spec, with Full HD 1080p movie shooting at 60p, shutter speeds of up to 1/4000 sec for capturing action, 15 Custom Functions and compatibility with more than 80 Canon EF and EF-S lenses.
