In the Field: Leica Q2 vs Fujifilm X-Pro 2 for Sports Photography
Published 20 December 2024 by MPB
The Leica Q2 and Fujifilm X-Pro2 are two high-end mirrorless cameras that deliver excellent image quality in a compact form factor. But which one is better suited for capturing the action at the Tour de France Femmes?
Sensor and Image Quality
The Leica Q2 features a full-frame 47MP sensor which enables superior dynamic range and captures more detail compared to the Fujifilm X-Pro 2APS-C X-Trans sensor. The Q2's larger sensor size also produces a shallower depth of field for creamy out-of-focus backgrounds. However, the X-Pro2's unique X-Trans sensor technology delivers accurate colours without an anti-aliasing filter.

Autofocus and Continuous Shooting
Both cameras have fast autofocus systems and fast continuous shooting speeds. The Q2 can shoot at 20 fps while the X-Pro2 does 8 fps or 11 fps with the optional vertical grip. This better equips them to freeze the action during bike sprints and climbs.

Lenses
The Q2 has a fixed 28mm F1.7 Summilux lens which offers incredible sharpness. The X-Pro2 is an interchangeable lens camera with a wide range of high-quality Fujifilm X-mount lenses available, making it more versatile. Telephoto lenses like the XF90mmF2 let you zoom in on distant riders.

Viewfinder and Manual Focus
For composing and reviewing shots, the Q2 utilizes a crisp 3.68MP electronic viewfinder. The X-Pro2 takes a hybrid viewfinder approach with both optical and electronic modes available. The optical viewfinder facilitates instinctive shooting but the EVF preview yields greater manual focus accuracy.
Video Capabilities
Both cameras shoot impressive 4K video with stereo microphones built-in. The Q2's full-frame sensor enables better low-light performance. The X-Pro2 has a microphone port to connect external high-end microphones for improved audio quality on videos.

Battery Life
Battery life is a win for the X-Pro2 which can shoot up to 1000 frames per charge versus the Q2's 370 shots per charge. Having extra battery power is invaluable when covering long winding stages through the French countryside.

Conclusion
At the end of the day, the Leica Q2's brilliant full-frame imaging and luxurious handling make it a superb camera for documenting the Tour. But the Fujifilm X-Pro2 offers more flexibility and endurance thanks to its interchangeable lenses and higher battery capacity. For photographers needing to capture a wide variety of shots throughout each punishing stage, the X-Pro2 gets the win. Either modern camera will serve you well on the roads of France this July.
