Top 5 Exciting New Cameras for 2025

Published 2 January 2025 by MPB

Camera technology is advancing rapidly, especially for mirrorless models. Recent releases, in particular, offer truly outstanding dynamic range and video quality thanks to their advanced sensors and processors. Read on to discover our top five buzz-worthy mirrorless cameras for 2025.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II is the much-anticipated successor to the Canon EOS R5. The R5 II's most significant upgrade is its new 45-megapixel Stacked CMOS sensor. This technology enables the camera to process images dramatically faster than traditional Back-Side Illuminated (BSI) or Front-Side Illuminated (FSI) sensors. As a result, the camera can now record 8K 30p video and shoot 30 frames per second.

The viewfinder on the previous R5 was already known for being one of the best, as we explored in our Canon EOS R5 review. But with the Mark II, we now have a new viewfinder with a 5.76 million-dot 120fps screen. But that is not all, the viewfinder has the same eye-tracking autofocus control as the flagship Canon EOS R1, which allows you to control focus with your eye.

In Canon's own words, it "feels like the EOS R5 Mark II is reading your mind.”

Sony A9 III

Sony made huge waves when they announced it would be releasing the first high-speed sports camera with a global shutter, the Sony A9 III. This means the sensor readout is instantaneous unlike rolling shutter sensors that do it line by line. This also means the camera is capable of extremely fast shutter speeds, up to 1/80000 second, which is especially good for sports photography. As well as that, it can shoot continuous bursts at up to 120 fps with full autofocus capabilites.

The A9 III is also the first Sony camera to have a pre-capture feature, allowing for up to one second of image capturing before you even press the shutter, so even if you are a little late on pressing the shutter button, the camera would have still captured that decisive moment. The Sony A9 III is a very exciting leap in technology for digital cameras, quite possibly being the fastest cameras we have had available to us.

The Fujifilm X100VI is the much-anticipated successor to the social media sensation that was the 2020 Fujifilm X100V. Read our X100V review. The 2025 X100VI comes with a brand new 40-megapixel sensor, up from 26 megapixels, allowing for more detail capture and larger resolutions. Another standout feature is the new in-body image stabilisation Fujifilm has added, the same one that can be found in the Fujifilm X-T5, allowing for steadier and sharper shots while on the go.

We expect the Fujifilm X100VI to be as popular as the X100V, so we put our heads together and came up with the Top Fujifilm X100V & XI alternatives.

Nikon Z6 III

The Nikon Z6 III is an excellent ‘all-rounder’ camera but is also especially great at speed and fast action. The Z6 III features a 24-megapixel ‘partially stacked’ CMOS sensor and boasts an impressive 14fps with the mechanical shutter and 20fps with the electronic shutter at an outrageous buffer of 1000 RAW files. It also has the same class-leading autofocus performance as the Nikon Z9, that is to say, it's damn near instantaneous.

This iteration of the Z6 series of cameras dramatically improves the video specs, making it a more appealing camera for hybrid shooting. It is now capable of 6K/60p N-Raw video and 6K/30p ProRes RAW video, along with support for H.265 video at 5.4k/60p. Couple these improved specs with a beneficial eight stops of image stabilisation, and the Nikon Z6 III is an extremely capable ‘do it all’ camera going forward.

Compared to its peers, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, Sony A7R IV and Panasonic S5 IIX, the Nikon Z6 III is now making a case as the best of the bunch in this very competitive class of camera. However, the critical factor in choosing a camera like this is increasingly down to the available lenses for that manufacturer.

Fujifilm GFX 100S II

Used Fujifilm GFX 100S II

The Fujifilm GFX 100S II's two big upgrades are the improved image stabilisation rated to 8 stops and the faster autofocus system, particularly ‘AI-based’ subject tracking and better low-light performance. The GFX 100S II now has better dynamic range performance being able to shoot at a new lower base ISO of 80, which should result in better detail and noise performance. We also get the new ‘Reala Ace’ film simulation, a film emulation of the Fujicolor Superia Reala Ace 100 colour negative film.

The GFX 100S II keeps the same dimensions and is slightly lighter than the original Fujifilm GFX 100S, at 883 grams. Read our full Fujifilm GFX 100S review.

With all these these upgrades, the GFX 100S II is an enticing option for primarily landscape, portrait and architectural photographers either looking to take the plunge into medium format photography or upgrade from older Fujifilm medium format bodies.

The ‘P’ variant of the Leica M11 rangefinder intentionally removes the famous red Leica dot for discreetness and adds 256GB of built-in storage.
