Learn: 6 Tips for Sustainable Landscape Photography

Published 18 April 2022 by MPB

As photographers, we always want to capture the perfect shot, but never at the expense of the environment we’re shooting in. There are a number of ways you can pursue your passion for landscape photography while mitigating its impact. Here are six simple steps you can take.

1. Respect your surroundings

Spending plenty of time in nature, landscape photographers tend to care about the environment. It should go without saying, but landscape photography wouldn’t be possible without the environment. We all need to play a part in preserving it.

2. Watch out for wildlife

It’s crucial to be mindful of wildlife at all times. Research the area beforehand to help you gain a better understanding of the nature that inhabits the area.

3. Bike or hike

Limit driving whenever possible. Riding a bike or walking are both excellent ways to stay in shape while reducing your impact on the planet.

4. Leave nothing behind

Everything you take to a shoot should be taken away, too. There should be no evidence of your presence at the scene (other than your photos, of course).

5. Buy used

Used cameras, lenses, and tripods are much more sustainable than new, and they're better for your bank balance, too. The same goes for other equipment you take. From bikes to backpacks, it’s always good practice to opt for used items.

6. Sell used, too

When you sell the stuff you no longer need, there are more used items for others to buy. So, by selling your gear, you’re actively participating in the circular economy. Plus, you get some extra cash to spend on upgrading your landscape photography setup.
