MPB: How did you get into photography?
OK: Ever since I was little, I've always had the urge to represent something artistically. I drew a lot in my free time. At school, I learned the basics of graphic design, but I didn't think about photography at that time.
It was only when I borrowed a DSLR from a friend for a holiday that I realised how versatile it can be to capture memories. Shortly afterwards, I bought my own first DSLR camera. At first, like most people, I had no idea what to shoot. I tried all the typical clichés; birds, flowers, insects, abandoned buildings, portraits of friends and whatever else came in front of my lens. I learned the basics, of light management and watched YouTube tutorials. Today I am a part-time photographer.

MPB: What kit do you use?
OK: I currently use the Canon EOS R and as a backup camera the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
My favourite lenses are the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM and the Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM, as well as the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro. Having an expensive camera does not make me a better photographer. What counts for me is that I master my photographic kit and know how it behaves in different situations.
MPB: Have you ever changed brands?
OK: I have never actually changed brands. Of course, I like to read experience reports and camera comparisons—but there has never been a decisive point that has persuaded me to change. I switched internally from an APS-C to a full-frame, among other things because of the better noise behaviour in low-light situations, and the better depth of field. But who knows what the future holds?

MPB: You use a drone a lot when taking photos, can you tell us more?
OK: A few years ago, I bought my first, inexpensive drone—the DJI Spark. The flying itself is not as difficult as it seems. After a few hours of practice, you quickly become confident in handling the drone. My only advice would be to never practice indoors! Depending on the photo location, a bird's eye view is worthwhile. Above all, top-down shots are very popular among photographers with a drone. Nowadays, drones are indispensable not only for taking photos but also for filming. It simply looks spectacular. But be sure to inform yourself about national drone laws and guidelines beforehand.

MPB: How much preparation do you put into a shoot?
OK: Just like when I shoot a video, I make a shot list. This may sound silly but I actually always write down notes, because unfortunately, I tend to forget certain things. I then try to work through this list as best I can. Of course, this is not always the case. Especially in nature photography, it's hard to plan most of the shots, because you simply have to stay spontaneous due to weather and light conditions. But there is a rough concept behind all my shots.

MPB: You have already worked for brands such as Canon Germany, Huawei, and Bagsmart. How did the collaboration come about?
OK: Most of my photo collaboration actually came about through Instagram. I was contacted by various brands, asking if I was interested in working with them. On the other hand, I also like to take the initiative and write to brands on my own. On Instagram in particular, it's harder to stand out because of the masses of photographers and the algorithm. Every photographer has a wannabe job. I currently regularly work with Mercedes Luxembourg and create content for their social media channels. Automotive photography is also a topic that I really enjoy.

MPB: How have nature and photography influenced you, or made you the person you are today?
OK: A nice hike or a weekend camping trip are good ways to escape reality. Sometimes you need that break from everyday life. And that is also the case for me. As I said before, I am a part-time photographer. My main job is a classic nine-to-five office job. I used to try to get all the important things done at the weekend that you can't do during the week. Today, I have to admit that I prefer to spend my weekends outdoors. You could also say I'm a weekend traveller. Apart from that, I'm not a beach holidaymaker. But I'm most drawn to the mountains, where I can enjoy nature undisturbed most of the time. The fresh mountain air is simply wonderful. You learn to appreciate the little things in life.

MPB: How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your work?
OK: In fact, I fell into a creative hole during the lockdown. Normally, nature or fresh air helps me to gather new energy and ideas. Of course, it was very difficult because we live in the city and only have a small balcony without a garden. I don't think I'm the only one who has experienced this.

MPB: Do you have a project you are working on at the moment?
OK: I currently have several small projects that I am working on. But nothing that I could list here now. This year has been very successful so far, but also exhausting. I'm now treating myself to a trip to Scotland to recharge. And then I'll see what the rest of the year has in store for me.
