this is the first lens, possibly a world first, where large diameter lens elements have been given aspherical surfaces with the help of blank mounting. the technique of high precision press forming is now a standard within leica and many lenses are fitted with this type of lens element. it is the summilux asph that started revolution that has greatly facilitated the improvement of optical performance that seems to have become complacent. silver chrome version is rare and it weighs heavier than black due to the brass material used for lens body.
