In the Field: Nikon D6 for Events Photography
Published February 7, 2022 by MPB
Released in 2020, the Nikon D6 is a heavyweight full-frame DSLR camera, ideal for sports, wildlife and events photography. How does the Nikon D6 perform for event photography? From the British royal family to Lady Gaga, award-winning entertainment and events photographer Samir Hussein has created photographs of some of the most famous people in the world. In this article, Samir Hussein shares his experiences using the Nikon D6.

Ever since I started out in photography, I've always been a Nikon user. I tend to upgrade to their flagship bodies whenever they become available. I've found this is needed to best equip me with the large array of events I cover, such as Royal engagements at home and abroad, big music concerts, red-carpet events and portraits. Most recently, I've been using Nikon D6 bodies, which are great all-around cameras that always produce in any situation.

As I’m upgrading to the Nikon Z9, and going fully mirrorless, MPB was the obvious choice for me to sell my D6 bodies to. They’re very professional and the whole process of selling camera gear is transparent and straightforward, making it hassle-free and reliable.

The No Time To Die world premiere was a massively anticipated event having been postponed numerous times due to the pandemic. My main aim was to capture Daniel Craig in a way that captured the essence of James Bond. Using my D6 and a Nikon 200mm f/2G ED VR, I was able to capture a few really pleasing frames of Daniel Craig that I will really cherish.

Lady Gaga is undoubtedly one of my favorite artists to photograph. I was really excited to have the opportunity to shoot her at the premiere of 'House of Gucci' in London. She flamboyantly strutted up and down the red carpet, giving great opportunities to capture her. Using my D6 bodies, with a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 and Nikon 200mm f/2, meant I could focus and work very quickly to get a series of stand-out full-length and portrait images.

I've been photographing the royal family for the past 15 years, so the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh was a hugely sad and significant event to document. With numbers very restricted due to the pandemic and no public allowed, it was also surreal to capture proceedings within the walls of Windsor Castle. I was positioned in the Round Tower, with a great view of the Duke of Edinburgh's coffin being carried out and placed in the purpose-built Land Rover and followed by senior royals on his final journey to St George’s Chapel.

Using my D6 bodies, and a 500mm f/4G ED VR lens, I was able to capture close-ups. I also used a 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR lens to capture some wider moments of the whole scene as the Land Rover began its journey.
