Review: Canon EOS 700D specs

Published March 17, 2025 by MPB

The Canon EOS 700D is a solid option for anyone considering stepping into DSLR photography. The camera’s specs include an 18-megapixel sensor, a nine-point autofocus system, shooting speeds of up to five frames-per-second and a rear Vari-angle LCD touchscreen.

The 700D incorporates an 18.0 megapixel Hybrid CMOS AF APS-C sensor, which helps to capture stories with excellent image quality. It operates in tandem with a DIGIC 5 processor that helps to drive the camera to process images at up to five frames per second, for bursts of up to 22 images. The maximum ISO sensitivity is 12,800, from a standard ISO range of 100-12,800, which can be extended up to 25,600 for more extreme low-light shooting situations.

The camera has a nine cross-point autofocus system for accurate analysis of both horizontal and vertical lines, which helps to deliver accurate autofocus in stills across the frame. Predictive autofocus is possible up to a distance of 10 meters [33ft] from the subject, depending on the lens. The camera’s iFCL 63-zone metering system helps to ensure accurate color reproduction and accurately metered scenes in many different lighting conditions.

A flip-out rear three-inch [7.7cm] Clear View II TFT LCD screen, which is in a 3:2 format, offers approximately 100% coverage and can have its brightness adjusted to one of seven levels. The LCD displays the camera settings and a Quick Control Screen for easy access to info about what settings and controls are in use and excellent reviewing of the images you’ve shot. You can also view the autofocus points on the LCD or the camera’s viewfinder.

The Vari-angle LCD screen is great for shooting stills and movies from ground level right up to overhead shooting, which can be easily monitored by tilting the screen to your point of view. For filmmaking, the EOS 700D offers Full HD 1080p shooting, continuous autofocus while filming and supports near-silent Movie Servo autofocus with compatible STM lenses. Stereo sound can be recorded via the 700D’s built-in microphone or via an external mic.

For added creativity, the specs of the 700D include a range of creative filters that allow you to add and experiment with options such as Grainy B&W, Miniature effect and Toy Camera. Theme-based scene modes can automatically pick the correct settings for the subject you're shooting.

The camera’s APS-C format sensor effectively adds 1.6x focal length power to your pictures. For example, a 200mm focal length lens mounted on the 700D will give you an effective focal length of 320mm in comparison to a full-frame camera. The key benefit of this is that you're effectively ‘getting closer’ to subjects such as sports or nature—thus, you’re getting more focal length ‘bang for your buck’ with shorter lenses.

Overall, the 700D has a good all-around spec and will also let you manually control all exposure settings or select your favored settings in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority. With its compatibility with Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses, other accessories and Speedlite flashguns, the 700D is a great entry point into a Canon DSLR system.
