Analogue Camera Demand Drives Surge in Leica Popularity

Published October 31, 2024 by MPB

In recent years, the camera industry has trended towards smaller, more compact camera bodies with advanced features. This trend is notable in challenger brands, like Sony and Fujifilm, which have become increasingly popular at competitive price-points. We have also seen a rise in demand for premium digital fixed-lens cameras. Traditional camera manufacturers, like Leica, have faced challenges from the shift in consumer preferences towards digital and mirrorless technologies.

However, Leica is on track to have its best sales year in its 150-year history, with sales of Leica analogue models growing tenfold in the new market since 2015. These models include the Leica M6, the Leica MP Black and Leica’s fully mechanical, battery-free 35mm film camera—the Leica M-A Typ 127. Leica's sales have also been boosted by the popularity of later lines, like the Leica Q2 and Leica Q3.

Today, Leica's success could signify a broader industry shift, in which premium brands may see renewed interest in high-quality, analogue options alongside the high-tech digital models. The trend towards 'retro' technology—combined with modern craft—may encourage other camera manufacturers to explore similar niche markets.

In the used market, the increase in value of used Leica cameras suggests a robust market for premium used cameras, encouraging circularity and sustainability within the photography industry. Our data shows the increasing used value of Leica D-Lux series models, premium compact cameras with built-in lenses. The Leica D-Lux 7, for example, is now trading up 62% year-on-year in the UK.
