Which is best for video: Sony FX3 or A7S III

In 2020, Sony announced a much-anticipated camera—the Sony A7S III. The following year, they announced another camera—the Sony FX3. But, this time, it was part of Sony's cinema line. But what are the similarities and differences between these two cameras?

The shared features of the Sony FX3 and Sony A7S III include a 12-megapixel back-illuminated sensor, amazing low-light capabilities, 15+ stop dynamic range in S-Log 3 mode, in-body image stabilization, the ability to record 4K up to 120 frames per second, a flip-out screen and a similar menu system. 

However, the FX3 includes Sony’s top handle with an XLR input, side controls and phantom power outputs, easier handling and a bigger dedicated record button. Plus, this hybrid camera has a definite focus on video—so there’s a much heavier emphasis on providing the best possible footage.

On the other hand, the Sony A7S III is a hybrid camera focused primarily on photography—offering a good mix of high-quality stills and video. If you don’t need an XLR audio interface, the Sony A7S III is more affordable than the FX3. You’ll also get the electronic viewfinder, which isn’t present on the FX3.

So if you’re looking for a more versatile camera, then the A7S III is probably the better option for you. But if you know you’ll mostly shoot video, then we’d recommend going for the FX3.
